Are Firearms Classified as Dangerous Goods?
Contrary to popular belief, firearms themselves are not classified as dangerous goods. They are essentially metal objects – articles or machinery. The dangerous goods classification applies to the ammunition, not the firearm itself.
Is Ammunition Considered a Dangerous Good? Can Passengers Carry It on Flights?
Surprisingly, small arms ammunition (UN0012) for calibers up to .50 can be transported in checked baggage, provided the airline is notified and doesn’t have specific prohibitions. Most airlines allow this, permitting up to 5 kg (11 pounds) per passenger. This information can be found in IATA regulation 2.3.2.1, which also lists the few airlines that don’t allow this practice.
Are Some Air Rifles Dangerous Without Ammunition?
Interestingly, certain sporting guns, such as BB guns or air rifles with attached pressurized cylinders, are considered dangerous goods even without ammunition. Some modern air rifles have large, highly pressurized cylinders that must be completely discharged before transport.
How Should Ammunition Be Shipped?
When shipping ammunition as cargo (rather than in checked baggage), it must be processed as dangerous goods. It is classified as UN0012, Cartridges, small arms, Division 1.4S, and must follow Packing Instruction 130 and Special Provision A802 (using a PG II certified package). Proper training and certification are required for shipping ammunition as cargo, unlike when passengers transport it in checked baggage for personal use.
