The Myth of DG Certification

Certificate of the Gods. Has a nice ring. Some people think that the IATA DGD has special powers that enable a “certified” DG person (and no, the “certification” isn’t from the Gods either)… this anointed person who’s been through DG training now signs the form, puts it in a pouch and sends it off to, say, their customer, who perhaps needs to return a DG to them. I’ve also seen corporate offices train one or two people then send these pre-signed forms to the shipping locations out in the field.

So what does the DG community think (that’s you)? One DG “certified” person in a central location signs the company’s forms and sends it off to their shippers in remote locations who’ve only had (hopefully) General Awareness, some function-specific, Safety and Security training, but not “acceptance” training. As we used to call it back in the day (okay, three years ago)
